About Us
Paynes Chapel United Methodist Church was named in honor of Henry Payne, Sr., who played a key role in the construction of the original log church in 1762. What happened to the original building is unknown. The second church, made of bricks, was dedicated in 1851. However, in 1902, the building was burned down due to unknown causes. Rev. Carlton D. Harris dedicated the present church on Dec. 6, 1902. The building made of bricks with a tower and cathedral stained glass windows was constructed for less than $2,500. Little by little, the bricks for the church were brought from Winchester, Va., via horse and wagon.
Today, the church is part of the Frederick District of the Baltimore-Washington United Methodist conference. Rev. Edgardo Rivera currently serves as the district superintendent and Rev. Marcus Matthews the Bishop.
